Georgia Introduces Mandatory Health Insurance for Tourists from 1 January 2026

From 1 January 2026, all tourists entering Georgia will be required to hold a valid health and accident insurance policy, in accordance with the Georgian Law “On Tourism”.

Key requirements

  • The insurance policy must be valid for the full duration of the stay, including arrival and departure dates.
  • The policy may be issued by either a Georgian or foreign insurance company.
  • Minimum coverage must be at least 30,000 GEL.
  • The insurance document must be available in Georgian or English, in physical or electronic form.

Mandatory information in the policy

The insurance policy must clearly state:

  • Parties to the insurance contract
  • Covered territory
  • Subject matter of the insurance
  • Commencement and expiration dates
  • Insured risks
  • Coverage limits
  • Insurance premium and payment terms

Exemptions

The following categories are exempt from the mandatory insurance requirement:

  • Holders of diplomatic and special visas
  • Holders of diplomatic, official, service or special passports
  • Accredited staff of diplomatic missions, consular posts and international organisations, as well as their accredited family members
  • Persons entering Georgia under international treaties or agreements
  • Drivers engaged in international road freight and passenger transport

Travellers are advised to ensure compliance before departure to avoid complications upon entry.
