Georgia’s international positioning is the subject of growing attention — and debate. In a recent interview, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze addressed head-on the questions shaping the country’s geopolitical future: democratic stability, relations with the European Union, accusations of a pro-Russian tilt, and Georgia’s role in a rapidly changing region.

The Prime Minister firmly maintains that the country is stable and focused on economic development, despite turbulent years and political opposition.
He rejects claims of democratic backsliding — including criticism of the new transparency law — calling it a protective measure modelled on U.S. regulation.

On relations with Brussels, Mr. Kobakhidze expresses frustration with what he describes as “artificial obstacles” created within parts of the European bureaucracy, while still reiterating that EU membership by 2030 remains Georgia’s strategic goal — and a constitutional commitment.

He also rebuffs accusations of alignment with Moscow, noting Georgia has no diplomatic relations with Russia and remains committed to peace after four wars in recent decades. At the same time, he highlights diversified partnerships — including the EU, China and the United States — as essential for national resilience.

An important conversation at a crucial moment

This discussion comes as Tbilisi hosted the 5th Silk Road Forum, where regional cooperation and global connectivity were central themes. I had the privilege to attend the Forum, representing Luxembourg, and was honoured to be invited to the Gala Dinner hosted by the Prime Minister at the Funicular Restaurant — a symbolically elevated venue overlooking the city’s ambitions. Whilst the Gala dinner, I had the opportunity to have a short conversation with the Prime Minister Kobakhidze.
